Do Something

Fast Company published a very interesting article, narrating how Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya deals with “creative obstacles”. In the beginnings of the company, he didn’t have a clue about what to do, so he bought some paint and told everyone to paint the walls outside of their factory. Now, what does wall painting have to with yogurt? Absolutely nothing. What does it have to do with starting a company? Everything. Hamdi wasn’t just thinking about delicious yogurt when he was moving a brush up and down, he was thinking about how he was going to be able to make that delicious yogurt and then progressively build an empire of delicious creamy goodness. If he managed to paint these walls, he was going to be able to paint the inside, then bring equipment, then bring ingredients, then employees, and then establish Chobani, as he did.

When I began my internship at Spoten, an early-stage start-up, I realized we were dealing with something similar. Just like Hamdi, we had an issue — getting started. Despite our unique value proposition, we had to find a way to combine it with our resources as Babson students and alumni, and come up with something meaningful, and make a difference with great urgency. But, how were we going to do this while living through a terrible pandemic, that has caused people to lose the desire and ability to make a change? We did something. No, we didn’t paint walls, we brainstormed, and as entrepreneurs, we took action. An idea came up, and that led to the next. We talked, we met up on Webex, organized our tasks on Airtable, and as ideas began to merge and become concrete so did the future of Spoten. If in this pandemic, we can get some traction, and make a positive impact in our society, we know that somehow, we can build Spoten. No, we aren’t starting the next empire of creamy delicious Greek goodness, but we are using our talents and knowledge to build something and help those in need. We are doing something.

We are sure that in these upcoming weeks, we will be able to create something meaningful, and we encourage you to accompany us in our journey as we strive together towards our goals. We know that in the times of a global pandemic, motivation and creativity are at a low. Nevertheless, we encourage you to start your homemade brownie business, reorganize that space in your house that looks clustered or any project you’ve wanted to begin, but start, go beyond, and like us “Spoters” do something.
